The Chesterfield County School Board approved the 2020-21 school year calendars during its February business meeting, expressing its appreciation to those who provided feedback and input throughout the calendar adoption process and noting that several changes had been made due to constituents’ voices.

Notable changes from the original draft presented in January include: moving parent-teacher conference day to earlier in November; reinstating Presidents Day as a student/staff holiday; and making the Friday before Spring Break a full-day holiday for students and staff instead of a three-hour early release.

Both of the adopted calendars -- the traditional school calendar and the year-round calendar that will be followed by Bellwood and Falling Creek elementary schools -- accompany this release and are also available at mychesterfieldschools.com.

    Highlights for the traditional calendar:

    • There are 178 instructional days in grades K-8, allowing the school division to meet the minimum state requirement of 990 instructional hours.

    • There are 140 instructional hours minimum for a “standard credit” in select courses in grades 8 -12, allowing the school division to meet state requirements for some middle and high school courses.

    • All kindergarten students will attend school during the first week; however, there will be a staggered start for these students: Children with a last name beginning with A-L attend school Sept. 8-9, 2020, while children with a last name beginning with M-Z attend school Sept. 10-11, 2020. All kindergarten students attend school starting Sept. 14, 2020.

    • Sept. 8, 2020, is the first day of school for sixth- and ninth-grade students, allowing them transition time in a new school in a smaller setting.

    • Sept. 9, 2020, is the first day of school for students in seventh, eighth, 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

    • The last day of school for all students is June 18, 2021.

    • Thanksgiving break is Nov. 25-27, 2020.

    • Winter break is Dec. 21, 2020-Jan. 1, 2021. Students return to school on Jan. 4, 2021.

    • Spring break is April 5-9, 2021. April 2, 2021, is a student and staff holiday as well.

    • Sept. 28, 2020; Jan. 18, 2021; Feb. 15, 2021; May 13, 2021; and May 31, 2021, are student and staff holidays.

    • Nov. 2 is a student holiday/parent-teacher conference day.

    • Nov. 3 is a student holiday and is set aside as a teacher work day.

To provide planning time and site-based professional development opportunities for teachers, the traditional calendar includes five early-release days for students: Oct. 16, 2020; Jan. 29, 2021; Feb. 26, 2021; and June 17-18, 2021.
