Member Value » Government Advocacy

The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce originated out of a need to ensure businesses within the county had representation with the county government. As Chesterfield County became one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, populations swelled and demanded high quality community services. County government began prioritizing initiatives and county improvements, and the Chesterfield Chamber became the advocate for businesses. In those early years there was quite a "tug and pull' between the Chamber and county government. Today however, the Chamber works hand-in-hand with the Board of Supervisors and county government to ensure all aspects of the county prosper.

“The Chesterfield Chamber is ahead of the curve in
responding and acting on business and community
issues. Membership is essential for business.”
Joan Girone, Long & Foster Midlothian

Recent Accomplishments

Business license taxes (BPOL): Working with the Board of Supervisors the Chamber succeeded in having the first $200,000 of business revenue per business license exempt from tax. This initiative removed over 65% of all businesses from the BPOL tax rolls. We are currently working to achieve a further reduction of this tax.

Business Development Fees: Although Chesterfield County has found it necessary to increase residential development fees very substantially the past few years, the Chamber has been able to persuade the Board of Supervisors to actually reduce business development fees to well below former levels.

Ordinance revision: The Chamber has played a major role in significantly revising and liberalizing both the sign ordinance and the landscaping ordinance. In addition, we have been able to promote a number of minor changes that improve the business environment.

Site Plan Task Force: Recently the Chamber completed an 18-month study of the commercial site plan review process. This definitive study has been embraced by the county and is currently being used to implement a number of improvements to the site plan process.
